What exactly are Prebiotics?
Prebiotic is a specific type of food. While many of the food ingredients we consume are digested immediately, prebiotics are healthy non-digestible food ingredient. Furthermore, prebiotics are heat resistant, which keep them intact during the baking process and allow them to be incorporated into every day food choices.
Why Prebiotics are Essential to Your Heart Health & Immune System?
Each year, many people die from heart disease around the world, and large number of people in the US alone report having chronic illnesses like infections, diabetes and cancer.
Prebiotics are one of the newest fields of nutritional research and offer promising benefits for your heart, your immunity and more. Due to stress, lifestyle choices and regular use of antibiotics and other drugs, you may be lacking the microflora which your body needs to maintain healthy digestion. Prebiotics stimulate the growth of healthy microflora that populate your large intestine. When these healthy microflora (beneficial bacteria) are allowed to flourish, they help keep you healthy and strong.
Inulin (fructooligosaccharides - FOS)
Inulin and oligofructose are soluble dietary fibres. Unlike some synthesized poly and oligosaccharides, our inulin is extracted from chicory roots using hot water. FOS is then obtained through partial enzymatic hydrolysis. When ingested, inulin and oligofructose increase neither the glycemy nor the insulin levels in the blood, making them suitable for diabetics. Studies have also shown that inulin fiber significantly increases the absorption of calcium in the body and even improves bone mineral density. This could have important consequences for prevention of osteoporosis.
Acacia Fiber
Acacia fiber is a soluble fiber that comes from the gum of the acacia tree. As a prebiotic, it increases good intestinal flora, and slows down colonic fermentation, which decreases gas and bloating. Soluble dietary fiber has many beneficial effects on health, including slowing transit time of food passing through the small intestine. For example, by slowing digestion of glucose, blood sugar levels are held more constant. The fiber is not digested in the small intestine, but ferments in the large intestine, where it produces short chain fatty acids, which are thought to protect against several diseases, such as diarrhea, intestinal inflammation and colon cancer.
Sugarcane Fiber
When you think of sugarcane, you probably think of refined white sugar. But sugarcane is also 40% healthy, insoluble fiber. While soluble fiber dissolves in water, insoluble fiber largely passes through the GI tract intact. That means it adds bulk to the intestines, which eases constipation and makes you feel full after a meal.
"The fiber profile in pHion Gold is very well balanced between soluble and insoluble. It really helps maintain intestinal integrity."
